Hello again my name is Ken Sweckard and I started this blog to help others and as well to find more freelance art jobs. I have also started a freelance artists group and page on Facebook which at this point many artists have joined and have participated. these are the freelance art groups and pages with many artists that do freelance in many different areas from film to video games and animation and vfx to web design and digital graphics. Besides this there are many other ways to find freelance art jobs and getting info on finding freelance artists. To start there are freelance art job sites that can help you find freelance artists, painters, freelance designers and more.  But there are many things to consider when hiring freelance artists and designers as well there are freelance websites where you can browse artists portfolios and get and idea of the specific style the artists specialize in.   As well if you are a free lance artist looking to get noticed a portfolio of your best works will give you a solid representation so clients looking at your work knows what they can expect from you if they decide to retain or commission you for a freelance art job.
You can find so many different styles of artists and designers and as well for the artist find so many different freelance art websites at this point in the online revolution that sometimes it is not east to know where to start.  First off you need to decide what kind of artist you are looking for or what kind of freelance art job you are looking for. From there first Google can be your friend in finding what you are looking for, but at times there are so many freelance type of listings that finding something that is relevant may not be as easy as it seems.   So to start I am going to give you a little boost here, and that being said, realize this may not be the only places that you should look. As well some freelance websites may have more freelancers from your country or less, it all depends on where you are from and the freelance art or artist business that you are looking for. For Americans just as and example you will probably find the higher paying jobs on more U.S. based artists freelance sites, while other countries may find more freelance artist based sites from a European based freelance art community site.  So that being said I will list a few of the best freelance based directories that I know of, as well they all may charge a fee but they do have intro based memberships that are free you just get less options for signing up, displaying your portfolio etc …   Ohh and one last thing before I list these, on of the main reasons for using a freelance art directory is that there are a few options that make sure you will get paid, be sure to follow these rules with milestones etc… because if you do not you actually may be breaking the freelance sites rules and as well if you  are not careful you could end up not getting paid for your work.

Freelancer    – This website has many freelance art positions and jobs listed at any given time. There is a heavy South American and Euro following on this Artistic Freelance site so if you are looking for a great freelance site that really caters to the South American and European freelance community try this site.

Elancer – This freelance art directory is the first freelance job site that was on the internet. You may join as a freelance artist for free, and as well add a freelance art portfolio as well. There are few different membership offers that you may take advantage of also and they will govern the amount of proposals that you can take advantage of on a monthly basis.  Elance has the most United States based freelance art listings that you will find whether you are a freelance animation artist or a freelance vfx artist there are links to freelance art jobs of each and every kind whether you are  freelance video game artist or doing freelance concept art you should find listings here from the United States and as well about every other country in the world.

Guru –  Here is another freelance site that I look over on a regular and there are often quite a few listings though the jobs do not seem to have as high of pay for the rate of freelance art work as the others. This may change as it gets more popular though.

Freelance Artists and Freelance Art Jobs

Hello and welcome to freelance artists blog, this is my first post though I will post on a regular basis as well I will bring in new members from Facebook, Blogger, Linkedin, Twitter  and even sites like Squidoo and as well others about freelance art, freelance artists, where to get freelance jobs, how to further your self and promote yourself as and artist.  To start being a freelance artist is not easy, there is so many things that you need to know and as well getting recognition is not something that just occurs. In order to begin your career as a freelance artist and doing freelance artwork for a living there are many things that are important and as well your art instructors did not explain or tell you about.  In the next few months I will go over and explain many things that you should be doing or should have already done, and these are just the things that many miss, but are important to your career as a freelance artist. First off we as artists do this work because it is something that we love to do. But at times as a freelance artist and hired paintbrush and pen,  there may be jobs that you do not like, this I can tell you is part of your job and pleasing your client if important to furthering your career in freelance art. If you have taken jobs that you not like you understand where I am coming from but if you want to eat work may not always be fun. In this case do the best job the client could ask for because even though it may not seem like it is important but to the client the great work you did means everything in the world and the client should get your best. In other words do not forget where the food on the table comes from, a pleased client is the best of resumes and if hundreds , thousands, or even millions of people see your work and it is below par you are only hurting you …. as well and unhappy client is not going to bring more business.

This all being said never undersell your abilities as a client, if the job you are bidding on is going to take more time then what the client wants to pay you for give them a bid for what the work is worth and leave it at that, if there is another artists underbidding you then let them have it rather then giving sub par work. As well underbidding your work and selling your self short only hurts the artist community as as whole. Once you start under bidding on projects then others start feeling that they must do the same and this is only going to snowball, yes some countries have a lower cost of living but when someone is looking to get cheap work done because of this and employ someone that they cannot easily communicate with they will pay for it when the job they wanted does not get done in  the proper manner.  I have seen this happen in many different manners where someone hires someone from a country with lower wages and they get taken because the person working for less takes much longer to complete the project, they do not have the tools to do the job, a new  contractor has to be hired because the deadlines are not being met, they have a lack of communication because of language barriers, there is no recourse for sub par work etc … there are many things that can go wrong and it is often because people are cutting corners. For this reason I encourage people doing freelance work to make a presence and work for people where they are before going international. If you are not making money where you live why would you think that it will be better somewhere else ?   There are so many mistakes that I see and this is the reason I am writing this , some of the best zbrush freelance artists I know are from countries other then the United States, and they work both in there home countries as well in Hollywood, but they have so much work at home the work in Hollywood is just a plus. The reason behind this is that they are great artists and have done the jobs they were paid top do better then anyone else does or will.  Well this is my first post and there will be many others as well as guest writers, interviews and more on a regular basis.
